All Wheels passengers will be permitted to ride free of charge for the entire month of September 2021. Three other East Bay transit systems are also offering free rides during September, including County Connection, Tri Delta Transit and WestCAT. BART will offer a special promotion of 50% off all fares with Clipper card payment during the month.
These fare promotions are part of a welcoming back of passengers to public transit. Area schools resumed full in classroom instruction during August. In past years, Wheels has offered a two-week free ride program for students. This program expands the Try Transit to School program to a full month and includes all passengers, not just students. The Wheels Dial-a-Ride Paratransit service will also operate fare free during September.
Over the past 18 months, Wheels has implemented new procedures and introduced new technologies to make riding the bus easier, cleaner and better than ever before. These include enhanced cleaning procedures onboard all buses, including daily disinfecting and fogging, the installation of barriers around the bus operator compartment to provide a safer environment for boarding and fare payment and hand sanitizer dispensers near the front door on all buses.
Wheels has also recently installed new air purifiers on all vehicles which continuously cycle clean air through the bus. These air purifiers use advanced technology to eliminate 99% of germs, viruses, and bacteria in the air and on surfaces, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
